Sammie Here! Welcome back to Worship Wednesday. It’s official guys….. We are ONE WEEK away from the start of Lent!
No need to panic. Lent can seem daunting, but it can be a huge blessing if we go into it with an open heart. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to practice discipline, lead us closer to God, unite our sufferings with Jesus, and prepare our souls for eternity.
Personally, I have gone into the season of lent with the wrong mindset in the past. For example, I have a major sweet tooth, so I would typically give up sweets for Lent. Looking back now, I realized that I did a poor job growing closer to God in my lack of sugar. Instead of praying in the moment of desire for sweets, I would just focus on the fact that I couldn’t eat them or I would turn to something else to distract myself, like television, my phone, etc. Now giving up sweets did help me with discipline (for 40 days), but I totally missed the mark. I could have been praying A LOT because I constantly wanted sugar (haha), but I missed that opportunity.
I know, I know. How did I go through lent without actually uniting myself to Christ? Well it is possible people, and I pray that I never do this again. Come Holy Spirit. Give us grace! Give us the grace to turn to You in prayer when we are tempted. Help us not to become distracted from what you are calling us to, even if it hurts. Amen!
I am still working on what I am doing for lent this year, but what ever it is I decide, I pray that it will truly be an opportunity to search myself and unite myself to Christ’s sufferings, an that it won’t be just something I complete or accomplish. For it is in suffering that we grow in holiness. Whatever it is we choose to do this lent, let us remember the why. Self denial and fasting are ways we can draw close to Jesus’ suffering. This is a chance for us to grow into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, and to become the person He created us to be. Are we turning to prayer? Are we helping people with our time? Prayer. Fasting. Alms-giving. That is what it is all about. All for Jesus.

Lent is challenging, but beautiful. It will be so worth it, when we get to the Easter season, and God willing, heaven. LETS GOOOOO!!!
